Gum Grafting in Montgomery, AL
Gum Grafting in Montgomery, ALGum recession is the movement of the gum line down toward the root of the tooth. This is one of the most noticeable effects of gum disease. There are a number of side effects that result from gum recession such as sensitivity of the roots, inflammation of tissue, cavities, and cosmetic issues. It is important that gum recession be treated because gum tissue is the number one protector for the tooth against bacteria. Without a proper amount of gum tissue surrounding the tooth, bacteria can cause bine and gum deterioration and even tooth loss.

Gum recession can be repaired through a process called gum grafting. Gum grafting brings the gum line away from the root so that a larger portion of the tooth is covered. Along with cosmetic improvements, this can also increase the overall health of teeth. There are three types of gum grafting available depending on your specific needs:

  • Connective-Tissue Grafts – These are the most common form of gum grafting. Dr. Yarbrough will cut a flap of skin from the roof of the mouth and remove tissue from underneath. The flap is then re-stitched and the tissue is attached to the gums. As time passes, the tissue and the gum will heal together and form a higher gum line around the tooth.
  • Free Gingival Grafts – Instead of cutting a flap of skin and removing tissue from beneath, the tissue is taken directly from the roof of the mouth. This is preferred for patients who have thin gums.
  • Pedicle Grafts – In this method, tissue is taken directly from the gums. A flap is cut and then pulled up around the tooth and sewed into place. This is reserved for patients who have plenty of gum tissue near the tooth.
